Assignment #12 -Assisted Ready Made

NWSA: Art 3-D Comprehensive
Spring 2018 / Friday/1:10pm - 3:45pm Room 5102
Instructors: Hans Evers & Lauren Shapiro
Assisted Ready Made                      assignment #12       Due date 4/13
A term coined by Marcel Duchamp in 1915 to describe prefabricated, often mass-produced objects isolated from their intended use and elevated to the status of art by the artist choosing and designating them as such. The term “assisted Readymade” refers to works of this type whose components have been combined or modified by the artist.

Duchamp:  …“a piece of art that is used more to picture the work of art with the mind rather than the eye”

Your must submit a written proposal for two DIFFERENT pieces (each with a detailed 2D sketch and an explanation of your concept and which artists you researched for your piece) via reminds to your instructor on/before Monday 4/2!

You will have four weeks to think, research and work on the project. There is no class on 3/23 & 3/30, and on 4/6 we will have critiques, so you will do this project at home. There should be very little technique and/or skill involved with the ‘fabrication’ of this piece.

Assignments #11 -Alter Ego Mask

NWSA: Art 3-D Comprehensive
Spring 2018 / Friday/1:10pm - 3:45pm Room 5102
Instructors: Hans Evers & Lauren Shapiro

Think of an aspect of your personality that the world doesn't normally see. Your challenge is to create a mask (think of it as a sculpture for your head) that represents that concept without illustrating it. Don’t do anything ‘TRITE’! This “mask” shouldn't look like anything you've seen before; approach the project in any way that makes sense to you. The materials are up to you. Let the forms, lines, colors and materials you use speak about your concept. You will wear the mask during critique on April 6th.

Your must submit at least two DIFFERENT proposals (2D &  3D sketch) via reminds to your instructor on/before Friday 3/23!

Requirements:
• The mask must obscure most, if not all of your face.
NO STORE-BOUGHT MASKS. This is not a Halloween mask.
• Some element of the mask should extend at least 12 inches from your head.
• Think about how you will wear it. Don’t be afraid to get your shoulders and upper body involved as part of the mask, or as a way to wear it.
• You will be graded on your effort as well as your creativity, thoughtfulness, technique, and skill in making the mask.

You will have three weeks to work on the project. There is no class on 3/23 & 3/30, so you will do this project at home.
