Rube Goldberg was an American cartoonist best known for his illustrations depicting machines he designed to complete simple tasks in overly complicated and humorous ways. His cartoons have inspired millions of projects.













Your assignment is to create a sculpture inspired by Rube Goldberg that completes a simple task in at least 7 complicated steps. The task and materials you use are up to you. This is an art project not a science experiment, each step should demonstrate a thoughtful and playful use of materials. No fire.

You will receive two grades for this project, one for preparedness (including planning drawing and working in class) and one for your final project. You will be evaluated on the following criteria: functionality (does it work), inventiveness, creative use of materials, planning (drawing), and preparedness. You will have a month to make this project, and it should look like you spent a month on it.

March 4 Bring a detailed drawing and all materials to class for a work day.
March 11 Work in class.
March 18 Spring Break-complete project at home
March 25 Final critique will be a demonstration of your working project. The classroom will be open during lunch for you to set up.

Combine (Wall Piece) crit Feb. 11

THERE IS NO IN-CLASS WORK DAY FOR THIS PROJECT, YOU WILL HAVE 2 WEEKS TO COMPLETE IT AT HOME.

For the next assignment you will make a sculpture to be exhibited on the black wall in the critique area. Your sculpture will hang on the black critique wall, we can put screws into the wall at whatever height you need during the critique. Like Rauschenberg, you will use both found objects and traditional art supplies. Your sculpture can be abstract or representational, and the materials are up to you. The sculpture must be at least 4' in one direction. See if you can find humor, parody or word play in the way you put your piece together.

January 28 in class: Introduction to Robert Rauschenberg's Combine artworks
Homework: Gather materials for your sculpture, begin working at home
Feb. 4 in class: We will take a field trip to MAM to see some of Rauschenberg's work in person, and then continue to the library for an introduction to the Fine Arts books.
Feb. 4 homework: Finish your project at home.
Feb. 11: Critique
