Assignment #10 -Performance Suit -UPDATED 3/24/20

Project #10: Performance Suit       UPDATED 3/24/20

Make a wearable sculpture that covers your entire body and that has a central performance function. This can be in the form of sound(s), movement(s), and/or a more conceptual focus. The sculpture/suit MUST project from your body a minimum of 2 feet in at least one direction.

You may use all of the skills and materials we have worked with so far: paper, cardboard, fabric, sewing, natural materials, found objects, and assemblage.

You can create a performance video for an extra grade, and can enlist an assistant (model/videographer)

You may work in a team with one other student to create suits that interact in a meaningful way.

Note: Some of these and examples we show are decorated dresses/outfits.Your project should not look like a dress, or outfit. It should transform the form (outline) of your body. Make the idea your own!  

In case you cannot obtain materials or otherwise feel you are unable to complete the wearable sculpture from home, you can INSTEAD submit two detailed drawings of the performance suit you would have liked to make.

Drawing 1 must be a detailed rendering of the proposed sculpture on 36”x48” paper (4 pieces of 18”x24” sheets taped together). You can use any dry and/or wet media. Approach this as if your were submitting a piece to your drawing or 2D class. Pay attention to proportion, perspective, value, (color is applicable), gesture and composition.

Drawing 2 must show the piece from multiple vantage points (front/side/cross section, isometric) and diagrammatically explain how it would be constructed, materials to use, dimensions, etc. This drawing must be 36”x24” (2 pieces of 18”x24” sheets taped together)

Homework:
After looking at inspiration sources, make sketches for your wearable sculpture, 
and bring materials that you want to work with to class. You should bring A LOT of materials to class. 

This is a big project. It will count for 2 full grades with option for extra credit for video

Homework grade (3/20, & 4/10) will be given for:
·       3 pages of detailed sketches/ideas, including sample color scheme and texture/sound/material choices & 3D model
·       Research on example artists.
·       Materials to work in class. Basic Structure (armature) of suit begun and brought to class.
+ Progress on piece


Performance Suit Critique Rubric:
A = excellent craftsmanship, highly creative, interesting sounds/movements created by suit, complete transformation (and coverage) of body from head to toe. Highly thoughtful and interesting movement/choreography and/or concept.

B = good craftsmanship (nothing falls off/breaks), good creativity, interesting sounds created by suit, good transformation (and coverage) of body from head to toe. Intentional and interesting movement/choreography.

C = Project suffers from ANY of the following: craft issues (some things fall off/break), not very creative in choice of materials or their manipulation, sound element not considered, not enough transformation of body, suit does not cover entire body. Movement/choreography not well thought out or intentional.

D = Project suffers from more than one of the issues mentioned in the C category.

F = Did not do.

The extra credit video must include the following:
Title frame including the names of performers, title of piece and date. 1 - 3 minutes duration.
Intentional beginning (how will you come into the frame?)                                            
Intentional choreography (what will happen in the video?)
Intentional ending (how will the video end?)
